We’re a little late to the party with this blog - but only because we’ve been busy helping people keep their homes cooler. Now that we’ve caught our breath, here’s what you need to know about managing heat gain in your home.
The Facts
The UK is getting warmer. All of the top 10 highest recorded temperatures have occurred since 2002.
Window coverings reduce heat. External solutions like roller blinds, venetian blinds or awnings can reduce heat gain by up to 41%, while internal blinds, shutters, or curtains can cut it by up to 32%.
Low-e glazing traps heat. It’s designed to retain warmth in winter - but unfortunately, it does the same in summer, keeping unwanted heat inside.
The Solutions
In a perfect world, every window would open inward, allowing for effective external shading to block sunlight before it hits the glass and intensifies.
External shading works best. Whether it’s a blind or an awning, keeping sunlight off the glass is the most effective method.
Can’t go external? The right internal blinds, shutters, or curtains still make a big difference - especially if they’re well-fitted and reflective.
Use them strategically. Keep blinds and shutters closed during hot daylight hours, then open them at night to allow cooler air in.
Ventilation matters. Opening windows at night helps the building release stored heat and take in cooler air.

The Benefits*
Better sleep. Two-thirds of adults get less than 8 hours of sleep per night. Cooler rooms support deeper, more restorative sleep - which improves energy, focus, and emotional wellbeing.
Comfortable living. Controlling solar gain keeps your home at a more stable, comfortable temperature, helping you relax and supporting a healthier indoor environment.
Healthier air. We breathe an average of 11,000 litres of air every day. Good ventilation and reduced heat help maintain better air quality, lowering the risk of eye irritation, skin issues, and even asthma attacks.
