As Valentine’s Day approaches, we thought we’d share what’s really on our minds - obviously its how to care for your window coverings. Knowing how to clean blinds, shutters and curtains properly helps them look great for years to come and saves money on replacements.
A little regular housekeeping goes a long way. These tips are general cleaning guidelines for common types of blinds and window dressings, so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have a specific issue (often child- or pet-related in our experience!).
Cleaning Different Types of Blinds
Aluminium Venetian blinds - close the slats first, then remove dust using a feather duster, soft cloth or short-haired brush. For heavier dirt, wipe the slats gently with a damp cloth. Regular dusting helps maintain the finish and prevents build-up.
Cellular blinds - clean regularly with a feather duster or vacuum cleaner on a low setting. Light maintenance prevents dust from settling into the fabric structure.
Day/Night roller blinds - use a soft brush or dry towel to gently remove dust from the fabric. Avoid excessive pressure to protect the material.
Roller blinds - most roller blind fabrics (except metallic finishes) can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth or sponge. If needed, add a non-synthetic detergent to lukewarm water. Avoid scrubbing, as this may damage the protective coating.
Vertical blinds - clean using lukewarm water and a mild non-synthetic detergent. Carefully brush the vanes while they remain on the rail.
Warning: Scrubbing too hard or for too long can damage the protective layer. Even if fabric is labelled washable, it may not be suitable for machine washing.

Wood Venetian blinds - dust regularly using a soft cloth, feather duster or vacuum brush attachment. For heavier dirt, wipe with a slightly damp cloth only.
Warning: Avoid detergents and excess moisture, which can warp wood.
Shutters
Dust shutters regularly with a microfibre cloth, feather duster or vacuum brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, use a barely damp cloth with mild soap for vinyl or composite shutters, or a wood-safe polish for wooden shutters. Dry thoroughly after cleaning.
Warning: Excess moisture may warp real wood or MDF.
Curtains
Vacuum curtains using the soft upholstery attachment to remove dust, allergens and pet hair. Regular cleaning helps preserve fabric quality and indoor air freshness. Fully close the curtains and gently vacuum from top to bottom. Repeat on the lining and along the lower edges where dust often accumulates near the windowsill or floor.
