Have a Safe and Happy Christmas

You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout, I’m telling you why… Santa Claus is coming to town!

As Christmas draws closer, many children are already on their holiday break, and parents and guardians are busy juggling festive preparations with keeping little ones entertained.

We’re not here to add to your holiday to-do list, but we do want to remind you of something simple yet essential: checking the safety of your window coverings.

Why It Matters

Since 2014, child safety regulations have required all blinds with cords or chains to meet strict safety standards. However, older blinds or improperly installed ones might not comply. Whether you’ve inherited blinds from a previous owner, skipped the “extra bits” during installation, or (hopefully not!) worked with a supplier who overlooked the rules, now is the perfect time to ensure your home is safe.

Simple Steps to Safer Blinds

With just a few quick adjustments, you can create a safer environment for your family this holiday season:

  1. Secure cords and chains out of reach - Keep all cords and chains well out of the reach of babies and young children.

  2. Install a tensioning device for looped chains - If you have blinds with looped chains (like roller blinds), use a tensioning device. Secure it to a nearby surface, ensuring the chain stays taut at all times.

  3. Use a cleat for cord-operated blinds - For blinds with cords (such as Venetian blinds), install a cleat at least 1.5 metres from the floor. Wrap the cord in a figure-eight pattern after every use, ensuring no loose cords dangle.

  4. Prevent cords and chains from twisting into loops - Regularly check to ensure cords or chains are not twisted into a loop that could pose a hazard.

  5. Rearrange furniture - Move beds, cots, highchairs, and playpens away from windows with blinds. Toddlers are expert climbers, so also keep other climbable furniture out of reach.

Thinking About New Blinds?

If you’re considering replacing your window coverings, choose a supplier who is a member of the British Blind & Shutter Association (BBSA). Members of this organisation adhere to all child safety regulations, giving you peace of mind.
